Free Smoke Alarm Installations for Veterans and Families of Active Duty Service members on Armed Forces Day
April 24, 2017
BROOKINGS, S.D. – Several organizations in the Brookings area are teaming up to provide free smoke alarms to veterans and active military families. The Brookings County Veterans Service Office, Brookings County Emergency Management, City of Brookings Fire Department and the American Red Cross are offering free smoke alarm installations and information about preparing should a fire break out in the home.
Veterans and family members of active duty service members in and around Brookings can schedule an appointment to have smoke alarms checked, replaced or installed, free of charge. The installations will happen between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20th. To schedule an appointment, call the Brookings County Veterans Service Office at (605) 696-8260.
“Installing smoke alarms cuts the risk of death or injury from a home fire in half, so we want to make sure every home has working alarms. We are proud to be part of this Brookings area partnership to make sure veterans and active military families have life-saving smoke alarms in their homes,” said American Red Cross Executive Director Jennifer Ross.
Non-military households in need of smoke alarms can request free alarms through the Red Cross website.
