Theft

Reported: 11/14/17 @10:50 a.m.
Location: Rural Volga

On the above date and time a rural Volga resident reported the theft of 10 round alfalfa hay bales. The bales were stolen from a field located ¼ mile south of 218th St. on 464th Ave. The theft occurred sometime between 11/01/17 and 11/03/17. The estimated value of the 10 bales is $800.

Fire

Reported: Monday, 11/13/17 at 1230
Location: 600 Blk. Washington (Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Bruce Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a garage that was reported on fire at the above location. It was found that a resident had taken ashes from the wood burner and placed them in a plastic barrel next to the garage. Due to the wind the ashes started the west side of the garage started on fire. A shed north of the garage then caught on fire as well. The damage to the garage is unknown at this time and the shed is a complete loss. The fire is under investigation with the Bruce Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Reported: Friday, 11/10/17 at 1905
Location: South Dakota Soybean Processors Plant. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept., Brookings Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fire at the South Dakota Soybean Processors Plant located at 100 Caspian Ave. S. in Volga, SD. It was found that the fire started in a pit built into the floor of the second story of a building. The cause of the fire is unknown. The fire climbed to a container and continued to grow and eventually reached the ceiling. It then tripped the building’s fire suppression system, which subdued the fire until fire departments arrived and extinguished the fire. The amount of damage is unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Volga Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Volga Copper Theft Arrest

In the early morning hours of Tuesday, 10/31/17 a Brookings County Deputy patrolling the City of Volga discovered 46 year old Kenneth Johnson from Sioux Falls in the act of stealing copper wire in the 100 block of Samara Ave. Johnson was also in possession of methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia. Johnson was taken into custody and is charged with 5 counts of petty theft, 5 counts of trespassing, 1 count of possession of a controlled substance, ingesting a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Along with this theft, Johnson is believed to have committed several other wire thefts over a period of weeks, all at the same location in Volga. The subject is currently being held in the Brookings Detention Center on a $10,000 cash/surety bond. An accomplice has also been identified and further investigation is pending.

Missing Person

Reported: 10/30/17 @ 6:40 P.M.
Location: Rural Astoria, SD (Brookings County)

On the above date and time the White Fire Dept., Toronto Fire Dept., Aurora Fire Dept., South Dakota Hwy Patrol, SDSU Police Dept., Deuel County Sheriff’s Office, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a rural Astoria residence located in Brookings County for a missing person. A 75 year old man walked away from his residence and had not returned. A search of the area was conducted using local tracking dogs, a ground search with the above listed agencies, and thermal imagery cameras. At approximately 10 P.M. personnel searching on foot located the subject to the north of the residence in a field. The subject was transported by the Brookings Ambulance to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries.

House Fire

Location: Rural White, SD

On the above date and time the White Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a structure fire in the rural White, SD area. It was found that a hot tub that is located outside of the residence had caught on fire. Due to the high winds the fire spread to the outside of the home causing damage to the vinyl siding. The cost to replace the hot tub is $5,000.00. The damage to the home is unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County

Accident

Location: 112 Elk St. N. (Elkton, SD)

Driver: Brinda Catillo-Lemus Age: 26
Elkton, SD
Vehicle: 1997 Toyota 4 Runner Damage: $1,590.00

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to Elkton for a vehicle that had struck the Elkton Bar, and a vehicle parked in front of the Elkton Bar. It was found that 26 year old Brinda Catillo-Lemus was traveling north on N. Elk St. in Elkton when the driver lost control of the 1997 Toyota 4 Runner she was driving. The vehicle then struck a 2013 Chevy Suburban that was parked in front of the building. The building received $5000.00 worth of damage and the 2013 Chevy Suburban that was parked outside the bar on the street received $3,750.00 worth of damage. The driver Brinda Catillo-Lemus was arrested for DUI 1st, reckless driving, failure to report an accident, and no valid driver’s license.

Rollover Accident

Reported: Wednesday, 10/18/17 @ 0837
Location: 201st St. just west of 459th Ave. (Rural Arlington, SD)

Driver: Lon Alan Swanson Age: 54
Arlington, SD
Vehicle: 2002 Pont. Grand Prix Damage: Total loss.

On the above date and time Bruce First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, South Dakota Hwy Patrol, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a rollover accident where the vehicle was upside down in a slough at the above location. A search of the area was conducted and the driver was not located. The driver 54 year old Lon Alan Swanson was located at his residence about a mile from the accident scene. It was found that Swanson was traveling eastbound in a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle then entered the south ditch were it rolled onto its top into the slough. Impairment was found to be a contributing factor in the crash. Swanson was arrested for DUI 2nd, possession of Marijuana, failure to report an accident, no insurance, and a seatbelt violation. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Theft

Reported: Tuesday, 10/17/17 @ 1435
Location: 200 Blk of Samara Ave. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of two padlocks being cut from an electrical box and an unknown amount of scrap wire stolen from inside. There was also some scrap copper next to the electrical box that was stolen. The theft occurred sometime between Monday, 10/16/17 at 1630 to Tuesday, 10/17/17 at 0800. The scrap copper that was stolen is estimated at around $100.00. On the above date and time Aurora First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that 27 year old Dustin Brown was traveling northbound on 476th Ave. in his 2009 Ford F250. 44 year old Tennie Larson was traveling westbound on 211th St. in a 1999 Chevy Silverado. The two vehicles collided at the uncontrolled intersection. 43 year old Mark Molengraaf of White, SD was a passenger in vehicle 1 and was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. There were two passengers in vehicle 2 were treated on scene by the Brookings Ambulance and released. Driver of vehicle 1 Dustin Brown was issued a citation for failure to yield at right of way at intersections. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Theft

Reported: Thursday, 10/12/17 @ 1100
Location: Rural Brookings, SD

On the above date and time a rural Brookings Resident reported that someone had went through his mailbox and had opened mail and packages and had stolen some of the contents. Within the last week the Sheriff’s Office has had numerous reports of thefts of mail around rural Bruce, Volga, Brookings, and Lake Campbell areas.
The suspect in these thefts is described as an older Caucasian male, possibly 60’s to 70’s, heavier set, with gray hair and driving a dark gray colored Chrysler minivan with paper plates. He is possibly acting under the guise of delivering newspapers, or taking a survey and possibly carrying a clipboard.

Burglary

On the above date the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to the above location for several storage sheds that had been broken into. It was found that 13 storage sheds had been broken into and the locks had been cut off all of the sheds. Miscellaneous items were stolen from the 13 sheds, with an estimated value of $650.00. It is believed to have happened sometime between September 25th to when it was noticed on Friday, 09/29/17. Intentional Damage / Vandalism

Reported: 9-27-17 @ 5:15 A.M.
Location: Twin Oaks Lane (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of vandalism from a rural Brookings residence. The reporting party advised that at around 5:15 AM they noticed that the 2012 Ford F150 pickup had all four side windows broke out. The damage is believed to have been done by some type of projectile. It is believed that the damage occurred between 3a.m. and 5:15a.m. The amount of damage is unknown at this time. Burglary

Reported: 9/25/17 @ 4:40 A.M.
Location: Holiday Gas Stop & Casino in Volga

On the above date and time it was reported that someone broke into the Lottery machines at the above location and stole an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect gained entry through the Casino door by throwing a concrete cinder block through it. The suspect pried open the lottery machines with a crow bar or similar tool. The burglary took place around 2:25 AM, which was shown on lottery machine receipts and video surveillance. The suspect is a white male of unknown age or height and was wearing a hooded jacket, baseball cap, and blue jeans.

The Brookings Police Dept. also took a report of a burglary at the Farmers Implement on the Hwy 14 bypass, where a pickup was stolen around the same time period. We believe the two incidents maybe connected.

On the above date and time a resident of Minnesota reported the theft of an undisclosed amount of cash from her purse. She reported that she attended a health seminar at the above location on 9/16/17. She said at one point during the seminar her purse was left unattended for just a couple minutes. She realized the following day that the cash was missing. The incident is under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident where a bull was struck in the roadway. It was found that Andrew Stevens was traveling eastbound and had struck the bull that was in the roadway at the above location. Juan Apolinar was traveling westbound and struck the bull that was laying in the roadway, causing his vehicle to roll. Juan was transported by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. Juan was issued citations for driving with a suspended driver’s license, and no insurance. Andrew was issued a citation for no insurance. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Vandalism

On the above date and time a rural Brookings resident reported two tires that were slashed on their 2001 Acura passenger car. The vehicle was sitting in their driveway at the time of the vandalism. It happened sometime between the hours of midnight on Monday, 09/18/17 to when it was noticed at 0430. The cost to replace the tires is estimated at $180.00. On the above date and time a White Resident reported the theft of a Ruger SR22 .22 cal. pistol that is black with a stainless steel slide. The pistol went missing between the months of May or June. The owner thought he might have misplaced it and has been looking for it but is unable to find it. He now believes it was stolen from his vehicle that was parked at his residence. Construction Accident

Location: Rural Elkton (Near 210th St. & 484th Ave.)

On the above date and time Brookings Ambulance, Elkton First Responder’s, Elkton Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident at a construction site of a new cattle barn. Three construction workers fell off of scaffolding that broke. The scaffolding was attached to a skid steer. 53 year old Antonio Vizcarra (Madison, SD), 51 year old Noe Torres (Madison, SD), 22 year old Isai Vizcarra (Madison, SD) were injured after they had fell about 12 feet onto the concrete floor. They were transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance. 22 year old Isai Vizcarra was then transferred to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls to be treated for unknown injuries. The other two were treated and released from the Brookings Hospital.

Hit and Run Accident

On the above date and time a resident from the City of White reported that a vehicle struck the passenger side of his 2016 Ford F150, causing some $1,975.00 worth of damage. The owner of the vehicle advised that it happened sometime between Saturday, 09/02/17 to when it was noticed on Friday, 09/08/17. The owner is unsure of the exact location as he didn’t noticed the damage for some time, but it is believed to have happened either in Brookings, or White SD. The theft occurred sometime between Thursday, 08/31/17 to when it was noticed on the morning of Friday, 09/08/17. The cost to fix and replace the cords is unknown at this time. Vandalism

On the above date and time a Bruce resident reported that someone had broken the antenna off of their DISH Network Satellite dish. The owner believed that it occurred around 0300 as a large group of people on a party bus came through the area that they live in. The amount of damage is unknown at this time. Hit and Run

Location: 198th St. and 487th Ave.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office was called to the above location for a yield sign that was struck by a motor vehicle. The vehicle was traveling westbound on 198th St. and went off the roadway and struck the sign. The incident occurred sometime after 2100 hours as a white truck and a small tan car with damage to the frame was seen in the area. The witness could not give a make, model, or license plate number of the vehicles. The cost to repair the sign is unknown at this time. Natural Gas Leak

Location: 100 Blk of Kennedy in Aurora, SD

On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, Northwestern Energy, Brookings County Emergency Management and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to the above location for a natural gas line that had been hit. A local electric construction company hit the line while digging in the area. Several homes in the area of Rasmussen St., Kennedy, Drive, and Truman Drive were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Northwestern Energy was able to contain the leak and residents were allowed back into their homes approximately two hours after being evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Intentional Damage to Property

Location: 500 Blk of Lovejoy Lane (Aurora, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report from an Aurora resident about an arrow being shot into their vehicles driver’s side door. The 1997 Jeep Cherokee was parked on the street in front of their residence. The incident is believed to have occurred sometime between Wednesday, 08/23/17 at 1800 to Wednesday, 08/23/17 at 2000 when a neighbor saw the arrow in the vehicle. The damage is estimated at $1,200.00. Vehicle Fire

Reported: Monday, 08/21/17 @ 0818
Location: ¼ south of 201st St. on 456th Ave. (Rural Arlington)

On the above date and time Arlington Fire Dept., Arlington Ambulance, South Dakota Hwy Patrol, & the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle that was on fire at the above location. It was found that the driver of the vehicle had become stuck when turning around and the vehicle stalled. The driver attempted to restart the vehicle and the vehicle caught fire in the engine compartment. The 1994 Chevy S10 pickup was a total loss and no one was injured.

Injury accident

Reported: Saturday, 08/19/17 @ 1700
Location: ¼ E. of 463rd Ave. on 203rd St. (Bruce, SD)

Driver: Jason Marlette Age: 46
Bruce, SD
Vehicle: 2001 Honda 4 wheeler ATV Damage: Minor Damage

On the above date and time Bruce First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury accident at the above location. It was found that Jason Marlette was traveling westbound on 203rd St. about 1/4 east of 463rd Ave. when a deer came out of the ditch. The ATV struck the deer and the vehicle went into the south ditch where it rolled. The ATV received minor damage. The driver Jason Marlette was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Theft of Prescription Narcotics

Reported: Thursday, 08/17/17 @ 1030
Location: Rural Arlington, SD

On the above date and time a rural Arlington resident reported the theft of prescription pain medication from their residence. The victim advised that on Wednesday, 08/16/16 at 1830 an African American Male was at his residence peddling cleaning products and was in their home. The victim advised that the medicine was sitting on the table and this morning it was found missing. The company the subject was with was identified as Platinum Plus LLC. The Sheriff’s Office checked to see if County had authorized any peddler’s licenses, which they had not issued any licenses. The Sheriff’s Office has been unable to locate anyone peddling in the area. Theft

Reported: Monday, 08/14/17 @ 1745
Location: 500 Blk of Kasan Ave. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of the theft of an undisclosed amount of cash and personal checks from a Volga resident. The money and checks was taken from an unlocked safe at the residence sometime between Friday, 07/07/17 to when it was noticed missing on Monday, 08/14/17. The owner of the home advised that the home is locked in the evening and when they are not there. There was no sign of forced entry into the home. Injured passenger vehicle 2: Jonathon Finnegan Age: 42
Volga, SD

On the above date and time Volga First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that Tanner Wulf was traveling southbound on 465th Ave. in his 2003 Chevy Cavalier and failed to stop for the stop sign at that location. His vehicle then struck the 2005 Ford F150 driven by Brandon Mcrae that was traveling eastbound on 214th St. There was also a passenger Jonathon Finnegan riding in the vehicle with Brandon. All three were transported to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. Tanner was issued a citation for a stop sign violation. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Theft

Reported: Monday, 08/07/17 at 1405
Location: 200 blk. of Hickory St. (Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time two residents who live in the 200 blk. of Hickory St. reported the theft of an undisclosed amount of cash and an Ipad Mini from their unlocked vehicles that were parked at their residences, one of which was inside an unlocked garage. The thefts are believed to have occurred in the early morning hours of Monday, 08/07/17 as one of the victims may have seen someone inside of the vehicle, but checked and did not see anything missing until later in the day. Pursuit

Reported: Sunday, 08/06/17 @ 0038
Location: Began Medary Ave. & 8th St. Ended: 471st Ave. & 202nd St.

On the above date and time a Deputy with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle near Medary Ave. & 8th St. in Brookings for an equipment violation. The vehicle fled heading north on Medary Ave. running through the stop light at the Hwy 14 bypass at a high rate of speed. The vehicle continued north on 471st Ave. at speeds of up to 110 mph. The vehicle stopped on 471st Ave. and 202nd St. The driver 20 year old Julio Cesar Mercado of Brookings, SD was found to be under the influence of alcohol and narcotics. Several open containers of alcohol along with methamphetamine was found in the vehicle. He was arrested for aggravated eluding, possession of a controlled substance, ingestion of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, DUI 2nd, driving while revoked, speeding 26 MPH and above, underage consumption, open container in a motor vehicle, no insurance, lane driving, stop light violation, and an equipment violation. He is currently being held in custody at the Brookings County Detention Center on a $3,500.00 cash only bond.

Vandalism

Location: 3400 blk. of Oak Lane (Rural Brookings, SD)
On the above date and time a rural Brookings resident reported a glass picnic table that was laying upside down with all of the glass shattered on the back deck of the residence. The damage occurred sometime between Friday, 08/04/17 at 0730 to Friday, 08/04/17 at 1500. The damage is estimated at around $400 dollars.
