On the above date and time the Bruce Fire Dept., Volga Fire Dept., Brookings Fire Dept., Aurora Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to corn stalk bales that were in fire in a feed lot at the above location. 900 round bales were lost in the fire. The bales were valued at $31,500.00. The cause of the fire is believed to be from bale combustion.

Theft

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a stolen 5x8 foot utility trailer from the above location. The trailer had a South Dakota license plate of RB2660 and was valued at $300.00. The trailer was stolen sometime within the last three weeks. 4 wheeler injury accident

Location: West View RD. (Lake Campbell)

Driver: 7 year old juvenile
Sioux Falls, SD

Injured Passenger: Jacquelyn Marie Mccord Age: 60
Brookings, SD

Vehicle: 2004 Yamaha 4 wheeler Damage: $145.00

On the above date and time the Brookings Ambulance, South Dakota Hwy Patrol, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 4 wheeler accident that happened at the above location. It was found that a 7 year juvenile was operating a 4 wheeler with Mccord riding on it with her. It was found that they were coming around a curve and had drove down into a dip in the road. As they came out of the dip the 7 year old accelerated and they were travelling directly toward some mailboxes. Mccord grabbed the handlebars and turned quickly to avoid the collision with the mailboxes and the 4 wheeler rolled. Mccord was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Reported: Sunday, 11/22/20 @ 1350
Location: 400 Blk of Adams Ave. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house fire in the 400 Blk of Adams Ave. in Volga, SD. It was found that the garage was fully engulfed in flames. The fire dept. was able to extinguish the flame but the garage was a complete loss, along with a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup, a 2020 Kia Telluride SX, a 2019 Polaris Four Wheeler, snow blower, tools and fishing equipment. The home received smoke damage. The damage to the home and garage is unknown at this time, but the vehicles inside of the garage and other personal item’s was estimated at $65,050.00. The neighbor’s home received exterior damage from the heat and was estimated at $850.00 to repair. The cause of the fire was believed to be a propane heater that was being used in the garage. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Burglary

Reported: Monday, 11/23/20 @ 0620
Location: 109 E. 1st St. Elkton, SD (CHS)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a burglary at the above location. It was found that sometime between Saturday, 11/21/20 at 1200 to Monday, 11/23/20 at 0615 a suspect or suspects broke into CHS store located at the above location. Entry was gained into the building by preying open an exterior door and interior door where they entered the office area damaging property and stealing an undisclosed amount of cash. The damage to the doors, siding, and office area is estimated at $3,500.00.

Burglary

Reported: Wednesday, 11/11/20 @ 1215
Location: 3500 Main Ave. S. (Dakota Mini Storage)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a storage unit that had been entered and items stolen. Items stolen from the unit included ice fishing equipment, two black plastic rifle cases, welding equipment, two plastic crates, a gas can for a boat motor, and a 2003 15 horsepower Mercury 2 stroke motor. The value of the items stolen is $2,220.00. The storage unit was locked, but entry is believed to have been gained via an unlocked storage unit that was next to the victims unit. The burglary is believed to have occurred sometime between Thursday, 10/29/20 to Tuesday, 11/10/20. Fire

Reported: Friday, 11/06/20 @ 1255
Location: I29 MM 135 southbound.

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a semi-truck and trailer that was loaded with hogs and was on fire at the above location. Upon arrival the back axle of the trailer was on fire. The truck driver was able to get into a side door on the trailer and move the hogs forward in the trailer away from the fire. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire. No hogs were lost in the fire. It appeared that the fire originated in the rear axle of the trailer and was able to be contained to that area. The estimated damage to the trailer is unknown at this time.

It was found that the fire originated in a burn pit some 200 feet from that hay bales. They estimated 28 big round hay bales were lost valued at $2,800.00.

Disorderly Person

Location: Volga Community Center.
On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Volga Community Center for a disorderly individual who had spent approx. 40 minutes in a voting booth. The voter was told by staff that state law allows a maximum of 10 minutes to vote and that they needed to finish up. The voter became upset and argued with staff but eventually finished voting and left.

On the above date and time a rural Brookings resident reported that a vehicle had went into the ditch and struck a fence. The owner of the fence believed the damage occurred sometime between 10/26/20 to 11/02/20 at 1625 when he noticed it. The owner advised that the cost to repair the fence was $500.00. On the above date and time a rural Volga resident reported a hit and run to a fence at the above location. The owner of the residence observed a black 2008 to 2010 black SUV in the ditch near his residence on Tuesday, 10/27/20 between the hours of 1530 to 1630 being pulled out by a dark 1990’s model pick up with a fuel tank in the bed. The owner later noticed some $400.00 worth of damage to the fence. On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to smoke inside of a home at the above location. It was found that there was a fire in the laundry room of the home and appeared to be a wiring issue. Numerous clothing items a clothing baskets were damaged. The appliances in the laundry room were damaged and the home received some smoke damage. No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The White Fire Dept. requested assistance and the Brookings Fire Dept., and Aurora Fire Dept. responded to assist. The fire was extinguished but the home was a complete loss. Stolen Vehicle

Reported: Tuesday, 10/20/20 @ 1315
Location: 46809 196th St., Bruce SD

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a stolen vehicle at the above location. It was found that a suspect stole a 2008 Chevy Silverado 2500 from Canby MN and abandoned it in the roadway in front of the above location. The suspect then exited the vehicle entered a shop at the above residence and stole a 1994 gray Ford F-350 from the shop with a SD license plate of 6E9516 and headed east on 196th St. There was also a Remington 1911 .45 caliber handgun with 2 fully loaded mags inside of the vehicle. On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a hit and run to a fence and antique wheel at the above location. It was found that an unknown vehicle was traveling westbound on Stangland St. and went off the road and struck the antique wheel and fence. The suspect vehicle is believed to be white in color as there was paint transfer left at the scene. The hit and run occurred sometime between Saturday, 10/03/20 to when it was noticed on Saturday, 10/17/20 at 1820. The damage is estimated at $800.00. On the above date and time an Elkton resident reported damage to a shed in their back yard. It was found that the door to the shed had been broken and 7 small window panes had been removed from the east side of the shed. The owners also found a DVD player in the shed that had been damaged. It was found that a suspect or suspects broke a door off of its hinges and entered the north side of the building. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from inside of the building. On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to Dakota Mini Storage just south of Brookings for a report of several storage units that had their locks cut off of them. Upon arrival it was found that several of the locks had been cut off of several sheds with what is believed to be a bolt cutter. The burglaries are believed to have happened sometime between Friday, 09/18/20 to when they were found on Monday, 09/21/20. The amount of property stolen is unknown at this time. Vehicle: 2008 Harley Davidson FLHX Damage: $2,500.00

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, Brookings Police Dept., South Dakota Hwy Patrol, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motorcycle accident at the above location. It was found that the above motorcycle was traveling west and a deer entered the roadway from the south ditch. The driver swerved to avoid hitting the deer and lost control of the motorcycle and tipped it over. The driver and passenger were transported by the Brookings Ambulance to the Brookings Hospital then onto a Sioux Falls Hospital with unknown injuries. The driver and passenger were not wearing helmets. The motorcycle received some $2,500.00 worth of damage. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

It was found that the driver 60 year old Kevin Doyle Olson was operating the 4 wheeler and was traveling west on 200th St. and entered the north ditch to check the fence. The grass was tall in the ditch and he drove into a hole, which caused the 4 wheeler to tip and land on top of the driver. 60 year old Kevin Doyle Olson was transported by the Hendricks Ambulance to the Hendricks Hospital with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time a severe thunderstorm producing high winds and hail made its way across Brookings County. The Northern part of Brookings County was hit hardest by the storm. Trees and branches were reported down in the Oakwood Lake area. Trees were reported down blocking roadways north of White. The City of White and City of Bruce had several trees and branches down along with other debris scattered around. Power lines were down on the north side of Bruce and the city was without power. There were no injuries reported at this time. Brookings County Hwy responded and removed trees from roadways. City employees from White and Bruce removed trees and branches from the city streets in their respective cities.

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle rollover accident at the above location. Upon arrival at the scene no one was located and a search of the area was conducted by the Elkton Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. A short time after the search started dispatch was notified by the Brookings Hospital Emergency Room advised that the three above individuals had been brought to the Brookings Hospital Emergency Room by a private party. It was found that the vehicle was traveling westbound on Hwy 13. The driver lost control of the vehicle and it entered the north ditch and rolled. It was later discovered that the driver Jose Jiminez Munguia and the front seat passenger Yoni Alvarado were wearing their seatbelts, but the back seat passenger Nison Adonal Lopez was not. Lopez was found to have been ejected from the vehicle. All three were treated at the Emergency Room for unknown injuries. The rear passenger Nilson Adonal Lopez was later transported to a Sioux Falls Hospital. The driver Jose Jiminez Mungula is facing charges of no valid driver’s license. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, Brookings Police Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that a 2010 Ford F150 driven by 22 year old Brayden Kane Thomas was traveling southbound on I29 just north of MM132 when it struck the guard rail cable and became disabled and partly in the right lane of travel without any headlights or hazard lights on. A 2018 Ford F150 driven by 50 year old Mark Daniel Olson was traveling southbound in the right lane and struck the 2010 Ford F150 that was parked partly in the driving lane. The 2018 Ford 150 then entered the west ditch and rolled. 50 year old Mark Daniel Olson was transported by Ambulance to the Brookings Hospital and then transferred to a Sioux Falls Hospital. 22 year old Brayden Lane Thomas was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages, which was found to be a contributing factor to the accident. Brayden is facing charges of DUI, careless driving, and operating a vehicle without headlights.

On the above date and time the Brookings Ambulance, Brookings Fire Dept., Brookings Police Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that 18 year old Misha May Pickard was traveling northbound in a 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada when the vehicle entered the east ditch and struck a field approach and vaulted landing on its wheels. The driver Masha May Pickard, and passenger Julian Rae Weishaar were transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. Julian Weishaar was later airlifted to a hospital in Sioux Falls. The other passenger Jordon Laplante was transported by a private party to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. Seatbelt use is unknown at this time. Alcohol was a factor and the driver Misha May Pickard is facing charges of DUI 1st, underage consumption of an alcoholic beverage, vehicular battery, reckless driving, and open alcoholic container in a motor vehicle. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Location: Iron Bridge over the Sioux River west of Brookings on 215th St. between 469th Ave. and 468th Ave.
On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of vandalism to a bridge at the above location. It was found that a suspect or suspects had painted graffiti on the bridge and started a fire in the middle of the bridge, which is constructed with wood planks. The fire damage was minimal and the incident happened sometime between Tuesday, 08/11/20 at 0800 to when it was found on Wednesday, 08/12/20 at 0800. The graffiti was found the prior week. On the above date and time the Toronto Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle that was on fire at the above location. It was found that the owner of the 2012 Chevy Silverado pickup parked the vehicle in the yard away from a shed he was working in. The owner stated about 10 minutes later he noticed smoke coming out of the driver’s side window that was rolled down. He then called 911 and the Toronto Fire Dept. responded and extinguished the fire. The vehicle was a complete loss. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Cattle Shot

Location: A pasture near 207th street and 467th Ave.

On the above date and time deputies were dispatched to the above location for a report of cattle being shot. Three Charolais cows and a Charlolais calf had been shot. Two cows and the calf were killed and the other cow wounded. The incident happed sometime between 1900hrs on 8/3/20 and 0940hrs on 8/4/20. The cows are valued at $3000 each and the calf at $1000. The incident is under investigation with the Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the intersection of Hwy 14 and 478th Ave. It was found that the 2009 Chevy Malibu driven by 18 year old Amy Charging was traveling south on 478th Ave. and did not stop for the stop sign at the intersection of Hwy 14. The Chevy Malibu then collided with a 2019 International straight truck driven by 43 year old Dienye Andrew-Jaja. Amy Charging was transported to the Brookings Hospital by ambulance and later transported by ambulance to a Sioux Falls Hospital with unknown injuries. The passenger in Unit 1’s vehicle was airlifted to a Sioux Falls Hospital with unknown injuries. The driver of unit 2 Dienye Andrew-Jaja was transported by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. The driver Amy charging is facing charges of a stop sign violation, DUI, vehicular battery, zero tolerance, possession of a controlled substance, ingestion of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and a seat belt violation. The driver of unit 2 and the passenger of unit 1 were wearing their seatbelts. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
