Theft

Reported: Thursday, 01/11/18 @ 1020
Location: Lake Sinai.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of an Eskimo Ice Fishing Shelter that was stolen from the middle of Lake Sinai. The theft occurred sometime between the morning of Tuesday, 01/07/18 to when it was noticed missing this morning, 01/11/18. The Ice Fishing Shelter is valued at $500.00. It also has duct tape around the shaft of an interior support. Workplace Accident

Location: Novita Nutrition, LLC (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time Aurora First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to Novita Nutrition for a worker who had fell some 1 ½ stories. It was found that a worker was repairing a pipe on a elevated deck and fell some 1 ½ stories to the ground where he received an injury to his head. He was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance. The incident is under investigation.

Fire

Reported: Friday, 01/05/18 @ 1037
Location: Near 463rd Ave. and 197th St. (Rural Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Bruce Fire Dept., Estelline Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Payloader that was on fire at the above location. The Loader was being used to do chores at the farm when the cab became filled with smoke. The driver exited the Loader and it soon caught fire. The fire is believed to have started in the heating system. The Loader is a complete loss and is valued at $50,000.00 to $70,000.00. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Vandalism

Location: Near 204th St. and 480th Ave. (Rural White, SD)

On the above date and time a rural White resident reported that someone had damaged the door and frame to the shop on his property. It is believed to have happened sometime between, Thursday, 12/28/17 to when he noticed on Sunday, 12/31/17. Nothing was found missing. The cost to repair the door is unknown at this time. Structure Fire

Reported: Friday, 12/29/17 @ 1740
Location: 2600 Blk of Lakeshore Dr. (Lake Campbell, SD)

On the above date and time a Lake Campbell resident reported a structure fire at his home. The Brookings Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded. The owner of the home advised that he started a wood fire in his wood stove and he left the home for approx. 20 minutes and returned to find smoke in the home and flames on the ceiling flange near the chimney. The owner attempted to put the flames out with a fire extinguisher, but was unable to do so, the owner then called 911. The Brookings Fire Dept. arrived and the flames were extinguished. The amount of damage is unknown at this time.

Pursuit

Reported: Tuesday, 12/26/17 @ 2000
Location: Brookings County, and Kingsbury County

On the above date and time a Brookings County Deputy was assisting a Kingsbury County Deputy who was looking for a suspect involved in a theft from a gas station in Kingsbury County. The suspect was driving a blue Ford F250. The vehicle was located near 208th St. on 455th Ave. in Brookings County. The Brookings County Deputy located and attempted to stop the vehicle, which fled from the scene. The vehicle sped westbound at speeds in excess of 70 mph. The vehicle entered Kingsbury County and through a field. The vehicle then drove back onto a roadway and then drove onto Lake Preston. Law Enforcement did not pursue the suspect vehicle onto the lake. The suspect vehicle was not seen leaving the lake by the Kingsbury County Deputy. The Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office requested the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office to bring their UTV back to patrol the shoreline of Lake Preston. The suspect vehicle was then located by the Brookings County Deputy on the UTV. The suspect vehicle found a way off of the lake and went back onto 207th St. where the Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Hwy Patrol pursued the vehicle. The vehicle entered another unidentified lake. The driver 31 year old Ryan Christopher Nesseim of Lake Preston was later located and taken into custody at a rural Lake Preston residence. He is charged with felony Aggravated Eluding, reckless driving, and several other traffic offense. He is currently being held at the Brookings County Detention Center awaiting bond.

Vandalism

Location: 200 Blk of Antelope St. (Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time a resident from the City of Elkton reported that sometime between Wednesday, 12/20/17 at 2030 to Thursday, 12/21/17 at 0710 someone had broken the window out of their 2003 Chevy Trailblazer that had been parked in their garage. The reporting party advised that they had parked the vehicle in the garage but left the garage door open. The cost to repair the broken window is unknown at this time. Nothing was taken from inside of the vehicle. Burglary, aggravated assault.

Reported: 12/15/17 @ 0300
Location: 100 blk of 2nd St. (Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time an Elkton, SD resident reported a male subject breaking into a building in the 100 blk of 2nd St. in Elkton. It was found that the resident next door had seen the suspect breaking into the building and confronted him. The suspect pulled a knife on the resident, then dropped it and a physical altercation took place. The suspect then fled the scene. No one was injured in the altercation. At 0435 the Brookings Police Dept. located the suspect in the 200 blk of Round Up Circle in Brookings. The suspect was identified as 38 year old Dustin Strom of Brookings. Dustin was arrested for burglary, aggravated assault, DUI 4th, driving with a revoked driver’s license, and intentional damage to property. He is currently being held at the Brookings County Detention Center awaiting bond.

Pursuit

Reported: Tuesday, December 12, 2017 @ 1:13 A.M.
Location: Moody County, Brookings County, and City of Brookings

On the above date and time a vehicle pursuit entered Brookings County heading north on Hwy 13 from Moody County. The Moody County Sheriff’s Office was attempting to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation. The vehicle turned west on Hwy 324 from Hwy 13 and was fleeing at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The suspect vehicle went northbound in the southbound lane of I-29. It then went westbound in the eastbound lane of 6th St. after it exited the interstate, into the Brookings City limits where the Brookings Police Dept. assisted in the pursuit. The vehicle was being pursued in the Brookings City Limits when it turned southbound in the northbound lane of I29. The vehicle then entered the east ditch where it went through a fence and into the Daktronics parking lot. The vehicle was pursued down several gravel roads where it entered the ditch and crashed near Hwy 14 and 469th Ave. The vehicle received minor damage. The driver 39 year old Alfred Siani, Sioux Falls, SD, is facing charges in Brookings County for aggravated eluding and several other traffic offenses, he is also facing similar charges in Moody County. He received a PR Bond from Brookings County but is currently being held on a Probation hold out of Minnehaha County. Passenger, 26 year old Brie Leclaire, Sioux Falls, SD, is facing narcotics violations. She received a PR Bond from Brookings County, and has been transported to Minnehaha County on their active warrants. Another passenger, 26 year old Lucas Riggs, Rapid City, SD, is being held in the Brookings County Detention Center on warrants out of Pennington County.

Structure Fire

Reported: Thursday, 11/30/17 @ 0410.
Location: 3250 Western Ave. S. (Rural Brookings)

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, Brookings Police Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a mobile home that was on fire at the above location. It is believed that the fire originated in the living room but the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Five occupants were in the mobile home at the time of the fire. Everyone was able to get out and no one was injured in the fire. Several dogs, cats, and a fish perished in the fire. The mobile home is a total loss. A 2002 Pontiac Montana Van that was parked near the mobile home received extensive damage. The mobile home directly to the south received extensive damage. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time a rural Volga resident reported the theft of 5 round grass hay bales that were stolen from a grove of trees near the residence. The theft is believed to have happened sometime between 10/20/17 to 11/10/17. The stolen hay is valued at $400.00. Fire

Reported: 11/27/17 @ 5:15p.m.
Location: 206th street near 479th Ave. Rural White, SD
On the above date and time the White Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Skid Steer that had caught on fire. It was found that the owners were using the Skid Steer to put straw bedding down. While putting the bedding down the straw caught on fire, which then started the Skid Steer on fire. The Skid Steer received extensive damage to the engine compartment and is valued at $40,000.00. The fire is under investigation with the White Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Brookings Fire Dept., Aurora Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residential structure fire near the above location. It was found that the fire originated in a vent fan in a bathroom. No one was injured but the home received extensive damage. Grass Fire

Location: Field near 468th Ave. and 220th St. (Brookings, SD)
On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a stubble field that had caught on fire. It was found that a resident had started to burn trash and the wind came up, which carried the fire into the stubble field and burnt 5-6 acres east of their tree grove. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time a rural Volga resident reported the theft of 10 round alfalfa hay bales. The bales were stolen from a field located ¼ mile south of 218th St. on 464th Ave. The theft occurred sometime between 11/01/17 and 11/03/17. The estimated value of the 10 bales is $800.

Location: 600 Blk. Washington (Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Bruce Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a garage that was reported on fire at the above location. It was found that a resident had taken ashes from the wood burner and placed them in a plastic barrel next to the garage. Due to the wind the ashes started the west side of the garage started on fire. A shed north of the garage then caught on fire as well. The damage to the garage is unknown at this time and the shed is a complete loss. The fire is under investigation with the Bruce Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Reported: Friday, 11/10/17 at 1905
Location: South Dakota Soybean Processors Plant. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept., Brookings Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fire at the South Dakota Soybean Processors Plant located at 100 Caspian Ave. S. in Volga, SD. It was found that the fire started in a pit built into the floor of the second story of a building. The cause of the fire is unknown. The fire climbed to a container and continued to grow and eventually reached the ceiling. It then tripped the building’s fire suppression system, which subdued the fire until fire departments arrived and extinguished the fire. The amount of damage is unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Volga Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Volga Copper Theft Arrest

In the early morning hours of Tuesday, 10/31/17 a Brookings County Deputy patrolling the City of Volga discovered 46 year old Kenneth Johnson from Sioux Falls in the act of stealing copper wire in the 100 block of Samara Ave. Johnson was also in possession of methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia. Johnson was taken into custody and is charged with 5 counts of petty theft, 5 counts of trespassing, 1 count of possession of a controlled substance, ingesting a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Along with this theft, Johnson is believed to have committed several other wire thefts over a period of weeks, all at the same location in Volga. The subject is currently being held in the Brookings Detention Center on a $10,000 cash/surety bond. An accomplice has also been identified and further investigation is pending.

Missing Person

Reported: 10/30/17 @ 6:40 P.M.
Location: Rural Astoria, SD (Brookings County)

On the above date and time the White Fire Dept., Toronto Fire Dept., Aurora Fire Dept., South Dakota Hwy Patrol, SDSU Police Dept., Deuel County Sheriff’s Office, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a rural Astoria residence located in Brookings County for a missing person. A 75 year old man walked away from his residence and had not returned. A search of the area was conducted using local tracking dogs, a ground search with the above listed agencies, and thermal imagery cameras. At approximately 10 P.M. personnel searching on foot located the subject to the north of the residence in a field. The subject was transported by the Brookings Ambulance to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries.

On the above date and time the White Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a structure fire in the rural White, SD area. It was found that a hot tub that is located outside of the residence had caught on fire. Due to the high winds the fire spread to the outside of the home causing damage to the vinyl siding. The cost to replace the hot tub is $5,000.00. The damage to the home is unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County

Accident

Location: 112 Elk St. N. (Elkton, SD)

Driver: Brinda Catillo-Lemus Age: 26
Elkton, SD
Vehicle: 1997 Toyota 4 Runner Damage: $1,590.00

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to Elkton for a vehicle that had struck the Elkton Bar, and a vehicle parked in front of the Elkton Bar. It was found that 26 year old Brinda Catillo-Lemus was traveling north on N. Elk St. in Elkton when the driver lost control of the 1997 Toyota 4 Runner she was driving. The vehicle then struck a 2013 Chevy Suburban that was parked in front of the building. The building received $5000.00 worth of damage and the 2013 Chevy Suburban that was parked outside the bar on the street received $3,750.00 worth of damage. The driver Brinda Catillo-Lemus was arrested for DUI 1st, reckless driving, failure to report an accident, and no valid driver’s license.

Rollover Accident

Reported: Wednesday, 10/18/17 @ 0837
Location: 201st St. just west of 459th Ave. (Rural Arlington, SD)

Driver: Lon Alan Swanson Age: 54
Arlington, SD
Vehicle: 2002 Pont. Grand Prix Damage: Total loss.

On the above date and time Bruce First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, South Dakota Hwy Patrol, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a rollover accident where the vehicle was upside down in a slough at the above location. A search of the area was conducted and the driver was not located. The driver 54 year old Lon Alan Swanson was located at his residence about a mile from the accident scene. It was found that Swanson was traveling eastbound in a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle then entered the south ditch were it rolled onto its top into the slough. Impairment was found to be a contributing factor in the crash. Swanson was arrested for DUI 2nd, possession of Marijuana, failure to report an accident, no insurance, and a seatbelt violation. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Theft

Reported: Tuesday, 10/17/17 @ 1435
Location: 200 Blk of Samara Ave. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of two padlocks being cut from an electrical box and an unknown amount of scrap wire stolen from inside. There was also some scrap copper next to the electrical box that was stolen. The theft occurred sometime between Monday, 10/16/17 at 1630 to Tuesday, 10/17/17 at 0800. The scrap copper that was stolen is estimated at around $100.00. On the above date and time Aurora First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that 27 year old Dustin Brown was traveling northbound on 476th Ave. in his 2009 Ford F250. 44 year old Tennie Larson was traveling westbound on 211th St. in a 1999 Chevy Silverado. The two vehicles collided at the uncontrolled intersection. 43 year old Mark Molengraaf of White, SD was a passenger in vehicle 1 and was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. There were two passengers in vehicle 2 were treated on scene by the Brookings Ambulance and released. Driver of vehicle 1 Dustin Brown was issued a citation for failure to yield at right of way at intersections. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Theft

Reported: Thursday, 10/12/17 @ 1100
Location: Rural Brookings, SD

On the above date and time a rural Brookings Resident reported that someone had went through his mailbox and had opened mail and packages and had stolen some of the contents. Within the last week the Sheriff’s Office has had numerous reports of thefts of mail around rural Bruce, Volga, Brookings, and Lake Campbell areas.
The suspect in these thefts is described as an older Caucasian male, possibly 60’s to 70’s, heavier set, with gray hair and driving a dark gray colored Chrysler minivan with paper plates. He is possibly acting under the guise of delivering newspapers, or taking a survey and possibly carrying a clipboard.
