Injury accident

Driver: Chance A. Strohm Age: 21

Vehicle: 1992 Chevy CK109 Pickup Damage: Complete loss

On the above date and time the Arlington Ambulance, Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office, SD Hwy Patrol, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported injury accident at the above location. It was found that 21 year old Chance A. Strohm was drinking alcoholic beverages at the above residence. At some point Chance went outside and got into the 1992 Chevy pickup that was at the residence and started the vehicle. He then proceeded to drive the pickup through a fence, a small shed and then collided with a tree. Chance was transported to the Brookings Hospital Emergency Room by the Arlington Ambulance with unknown injuries. Alcohol was a factor in the accident and Chance will be facing charges of DUI 1st. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Injury accident

Reported: Sunday, 03/15/20 @ 0710
Location: Hwy 13 and North Drive (Elkton, SD)

Driver: Kevin Michael Davis Age: 23
Sioux Falls, SD
Vehicle: 2018 Nissan Altima Damage: Total loss.

On Sunday, 03/15/20 at about 0710 the Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a rollover accident at the above location. It was found that 23 year old Kevin Michael Davis of Sioux Falls was travelling eastbound on SD Hwy 13 when he went off the road into the south ditch and rolled coming to rest on the south side of the RR tracks. The driver was transported to the Brookings Hospital and later air lifted to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls with unknown injuries. The vehicle was a total loss. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. Alcohol was a factor in the crash and the Driver Kevin Michael Davis will be facing charges of DUI, and careless driving.

Burglary

Reported: Tuesday, 03/10/20 @ 1200
Location: Brookings County Hwy Shop. (Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a door being damaged on the east side of the Brookings County Hwy Shop in Bruce, SD. It was found that an unknown suspect or suspects entered the shop and stole a 10 drawer tool box. Several tools were stolen that included a Dewalt light, Phillips head and standard screw driver set, wrenches, sockets, ½ drive impact, set of extensions and reducers for sockets, metric Allen wrenches, standard Allen wrenches, pry bar set, big 5’ bar, 10 different vice grips, a magnet mirror, pliers, and misc tools. The cost to replace the toolbox and tools is estimated at $5,344.32. The cost to repair the door is estimated at $50.00. The burglary occurred sometime between Monday, 03/09/20 at 1030, to when it was noticed on Tuesday, 03/10/20 at 0630. Injury accident ( Car vs Train )

Driver vehicle 1: Itzel Tattiana Vincent Age: 25
Lake Benton, MN.

Vehicle 1: 2006 Ford Focus Damage: Total loss
Owner of train: Rapid City Pierre Eastern Railroad

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, South Dakota Hwy Patrol, Brookings Police Dept., & Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a car –v- train accident at the above location. It was found that 25 year old Itzel Tattiana Vincent was traveling north on Cornell Ave and did not see the train approaching the tracks. The vehicle then attempted to cross the tracks where it was struck by the train, causing extensive damage to the car. The driver of the car Itzel Tattiana was transported by the Elkton Ambulance to the Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. The vehicle Itzel was driving was a total loss. The train and a sign received some $750.00 worth of damage. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. The driver of the car Itzel Tattiana Vincent is facing charges of failure to stop at a railroad crossing.

Lost/Stolen German Shepherd Dog ( Neeko )

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a lost or stolen neutered male German Shepard dog named Neeko. The dog is black/red in color and has one ear that sticks straight up and the other droops down. The dog has been missing from the farm since Tuesday, 02/25/20 at 1230. Hit and Run

Location: 200 Blk of E. 2nd St. (White, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a hit and run accident at the above location. It was found that the owner of the vehicle had parked their 2015 Ford F150 pickup in the apartment parking lot. It was later found that the vehicle had an estimated $2,000.00 worth of damage to the rear bumper. The hit and run is believed to have happened sometime between Friday, 02/28/20 at 1900 to when it was noticed on Saturday, 02/29/20 at 0645. On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a hit and run at the above location. It was found that the stop sign for the west bound traffic had been knocked down. Vehicle parts at the scene were from an unknown maroon vehicle. The stop sign was owned by the South Dakota Dept. of Transportation and will cost approx.. $200.00 to replace. On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., Brookings Fire Dept., Bruce Fire Dept., Elkton Fire Dept., Sinai Fire Dept., Volga Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a sheep barn that was on fire. 15 ewe’s and 17 lambs were lost in the fire. The barn was also a complete loss. The total value of the loss is estimated at $30,025.00. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Grain Bin Accident (Death)

Location: Rural Elkton, SD. Residence

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, Brookings Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, personal from the Aurora Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a person possibly trapped inside of a grain bin with corn in it. Sections of the grain bin were removed to empty the corn from the bin. 27 year old Christopher Robert Bauman was found deceased inside of the grain bin. Christopher had been augering corn from the bin. It’s unknown why he entered the grain bin. The incident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time a resident of the City of White reported a hit and run accident that occurred in front of their residence in the 200 blk of White, SD. The hit and run is believed to have happened in the early morning hours of Monday, 02/11/20 between the hours of 0100 to 0700 in the morning. The victim’s vehicle is a 2008 Subaru Legacy and it received an estimated $1,900.00 worth of damage. The suspect vehicle is unknown. Vehicle 2: 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix Damage: $7,000.00

On the above date and time the Arlington Fire Dept., Arlington Ambulance, South Dakota Hwy Patrol, Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office, and Brookings County Sherriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that unit 1 was traveling north in a 2011 Ford Focus, and unit 2 was also traveling north on Hwy 81 in a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix. Driver of unit 2 turned it’s blinker on and was in the process of turning east onto 203rd St. from Hwy 81. Driver of unit 1 did not see the blinker of unit 2 on and collided with unit 2. Unit 1 then rolled and came to rest upright in the northeast corner of the intersection. The driver of unit 1, 59 year old Sandra Sue Meylor was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Arlington Ambulance with unknown injuries. The driver of unit 2, 63 year old Cynthia Charlene Converse was transported to the hospital by a private party with unknown injuries. Driver of unit 1 Sandra Sue Meylor was issued a citation for careless driving, and following too closely. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

It was found that the 2003 GMC Envoy driven by 50 year old Esther Hernandez was traveling north and the driver lost control of the vehicle on the icy road conditions. The vehicle entered the east ditch where it rolled onto it’s side. Both the driver and passenger 61 year old Sandy Bloedel-Gudgeon were wearing their seatbelts. Both the driver and passenger were transported to the Brookings Hospital, by the Elkton Ambulance with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Pursuit

Reported: Friday, 01/10/20 @ 0339
Location: Hwy 14 and Hansina Ave. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time a Deputy from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a 2011 Chevy Silverado that was travelling 61 mph in a 35 mph zone on Hwy 14 at Hansina Ave. in Volga. While trying to stop the suspect vehicle it fled traveling north on 464th Ave. The suspect continued north with speeds reaching in excess of 100 mph. The suspect ran stop signs at 204th St. and 201st St. The pursuit ended when the suspect went into the ditch at the intersection of 196th St. and 464th Ave. The suspect 32 year old Casey Lee Verhey from Lake Preston, SD was taken into custody and charged with DUI 2nd, eluding Law Enforcement, reckless driving, speeding, lane violations, and 2 stop sign violations. The University Police Dept., Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office, and Brookings Police Dept. assisted with the pursuit.

One vehicle injury accident

Vehicle: 2006 Kia Optima LX/EX Damage: Total loss.

On the above date and time the Brookings Ambulance and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported injury accident at the above location. It was found that 16 year old Tatum Nelson was traveling westbound on 214th St. near 467th Ave. when he lost control of the 2006 Kia Optima LX/EX that he was driving. He lost control of the vehicle when he hit an ice patch on the roadway. The vehicle travelled into the south ditch, over a driveway striking a mailbox and collided with a tree. There were two other occupants in the vehicle. Tatum, and one of the passengers 16 year old Logan Stotz were transported to the Brookings Hospital Emergency Room with unknown injuries. The vehicle was a total loss. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. Charges are pending against Tatum for overdriving road conditions and careless driving.

Single Vehicle Injury Accident

Reported: 11/30/19 @ 1245
Location: ½ mile south of 205th st. on 478th ave.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and White Ambulance were dispatched to the above location for a single vehicle injury accident. It was found that 27 old Anthony Dempewolf of Brookings was traveling Northbound on 478th Ave. in his 2004 Cadillac Escalade and hit a slippery stretch of road causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle entered the west ditch and hit a field approach causing the vehicle to become airborne before coming to rest in the west ditch. The damage to the vehicle is estimated at around $2,000. The driver and two passengers Tierrien Dempewolf age 4 and Theedrick Dempewolf Age 2 were all taken by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital to be evaluated for injuries.

Vehicle Fire

Location: 462nd Ave. and 206th St. (Rural Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle on fire at the above location. It was found that the driver had stopped the vehicle as he noticed the odor of smoke. They exited the vehicle and found flames coming from the rear of the 2003 Chevy Trailblazer they were driving. The vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. The Volga Fire Dept. extinguished the flames but the vehicle was a complete loss. The cause of the fire is unknown. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time Aurora First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a injury accident in the 700 Blk of Lovejoy Lane in Aurora, SD. It was found that the owner and driver of the motorcycle 54 year old Paul Richter had pulled his vehicle onto Lovejoy Lane from his residence. He became dizzy due to a medical condition and tipped the motorcycle over. Paul was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance and treated for unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Location: 200 blk of N. Elk St. (Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a garage that was on fire in the 200 blk of N. Elk St. in Elkton, SD. It was believed that the fire started in the electrical box inside of the garage. There was several cars inside of the garage that included a 1967 Dodge Charger, 1971 Plymouth Duster, 1979 Dodge Colt, YZ250 dirt bike, 1989 Kawasaki 550 motorcycle, various tools, and stereo system. There was also a Chevy Silverado pickup parked next to the garage that received some $5,000.00 worth of damage. Everything that was inside of the garage was a complete loss. A utility pole, wire and transformer owned by Ottertail Power Company received some $5,000.00 worth of damage. The total amount lost in the fire is estimated at $124,000.00. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Location: AG First Farmers Coop-Volga (104 Kasan Ave.)
On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a grain dryer that was on fire at the above location. The fire was quickly extinguished and the only damage was to the grain dryer. The cause of the fire is believed to be an equipment malfunction, and the damage is unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
