Golf cart thefts

Reported: Wednesday, 07/03/19.
Location: Brookings Country Club (Lake Campbell)

On the above date the Brookings County Club reported the theft of four golf carts. The golf carts are Club Car Brand and they are blue in color and worth $4,500.00 each. The golf carts are owned by NB Golf Carts of Hendricks, MN, and are leased by the Brookings Country Club. The total loss was $18,000.00. The theft is believed to have happened sometime between Monday, July 1st, 2019 to Tuesday, July 2nd 2019. It is believed to be related to the same golf cart thefts that occurred in late July of 2018 when two were stolen from the Country Club along with many more golf carts being stolen from other courses in the region. Attempted Homicide suspect and stolen Vehicle

Reported: Tuesday, 07/02/19 @ 1000
Location: 300 Blk of 35th St. S. (Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings Police Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office had received information that 44 year old Kevin Haug of Yankton, SD who was wanted on warrants for Attempted Homicide in Nebraska may be in the Brookings area. A search for the suspect was conducted in several locations by the Sheriff’s Office and Police Dept but the suspect was not located. At 1500 a UHaul truck was stolen from the above location. The UHaul truck was believed to have been stolen by Kevin Haug. The UHaul truck was located in the Yankton area and a pursuit began with the Yankton Police Dept. that crossed the South Dakota/Nebraska state line and continued into Nebraska with the Cedar County Sheriff's Office. Vehicles from the Yankton Police Dept., and Cedar County Sheriff’s Office were damaged by the stolen suspect vehicle. The suspect 44 year old Kevin Haug was apprehended in Nebraska by the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office. He will be facing numerous charges in Cedar County Neb., Yankton Co. South Dakota, and will face a charge of Grand Theft in Brookings Co. South Dakota.

Burglary

Reported: Monday, 07/01/19 @ 2135
Location: 700 Blk of Samara Ave. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time a resident of Volga reported the theft of a 100lb air compressor. The compressor was taken from the residence between 2300hrs on 6/31/19 and 0500hrs on 7/1/19. It’s described as red in color, broken pressure gauge, and has 10ft Blue air hose attached to it. No signs of forced entry were observed. The estimated value is $150.

Vandalism

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 100 blk of Beaver St. in Elkton to take a report of a window that had been vandalized. It was found that a front windshield on a 1999 Chevy Cavalier had been broken with an unknown object. The vandalism occurred sometime between Tuesday, 06/25/19 at 2300 to Friday, 06/28/19 at 1110. The cost to replace the windshield is estimated at $250.00. Counterfeit twenty dollar bill

Location: Richland State Bank (Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a counterfeit twenty dollar bill that was passed at the Richland State Bank in Bruce, SD. The counterfeit bill was found while doing a balance check on the drawers at the end of the day. The bill was believed to have been passed sometime between Monday, 06/24/19 at 0700 to when it was found on Tuesday, 06/25/19 at 1540. Burglary, & intentional damage to property

Reported: Monday, 06/24/19 @ 0730
Location: 600 Blk of Spruce St. (Aurora, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a construction site at the above location for a burglary and intentional damage to property. It was found that someone gained entry into a home that was under construction through an unlocked window. It was also found that a construction trailer door had been preyed open, causing an estimated $1,000.00 worth of damage. The break in happened sometime between Saturday, 06/22/19 at 1700 to when it was noticed on Monday, 06/24/19 at 0700.

The owner of the construction site also advised that he and another contractor had their trailers broke into sometime on either the weekend of Saturday, May 4th or Saturday, May 11th, 2019. These break-in’s were not reported at the time they occurred. Stolen during those break-in’s were a black and yellow Dewalt bag with a Dewalt XR Sawsall, Dewalt XR Circular saw, a Dewalt battery charger, a Dewalt impact screw gun, and two Dewalt batteries. All of these items would have the initials “RR” on them in permanent marker. There was also a miter saw that was stolen but the brand was unknown and this item does not have any markings on it. The total value of the items stolen was $690.00. Injury accident (Motor vehicle –v- bicyclist)

On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a car –v- bicyclist accident at the above location. It was found that 41 year old Amy Mae Salter was traveling west on Hwy 14. Amy advised that she may have nodded off as she was fatigued and did not see the bicyclist when she struck her. The bicyclist 23 year old Anna Grace Bearss was traveling west on the shoulder of Hwy 14. Anna was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance to be treated for unknown injuries.

Hit and run accident

Location: 100 Blk of W. Main St. (White, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hit and run accident at the above location. It was found that a 2009 Mazda passenger car was parked on the street at 0930 and noticed the damage at 1900. It appears that someone may have been hauling branches down the roadway as there were drag marks and leaves in the roadway, up to where the accident occurred. The vehicle received between $500.00 to $1,000.00 worth of damage. Alcohol compliance check

A total of eleven businesses were checked in Brookings County. Two business failed the compliance check and sold alcohol to a 20 year old buyer. The business that failed were Steel Grit Bar & Grill in Bruce, and Six Mile Creek Golf Club in White. During the previous compliance check in January 2018, no businesses made sales to the underage buyer.

Injury accident

Driver: Jackson Kolby Mears Age: 18

Vehicle: 2009 Chevy Silverado Damage: $11,000.00

On the above date and time the Brookings Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, SDSU Police Dept., Brookings Police Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a rollover accident at the above location. It was found that the vehicle was traveling northbound when the driver Jackson Kolby Mears fell asleep. The vehicle entered the east ditch where the driver woke up and attempted to steer the vehicle back onto the roadway. He then lost control of the vehicle where it rolled into the median. Jackson Kolby Mears was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Burglary

Location: 200 blk of Kasan Ave. in Volga.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s responded to a reported burglary at the above location. It was found that sometime between Saturday, 05/18/19 at 1830 to Thursday, 06/06/19 at 1730 someone entered the residence and stole two Omega watches, a Rolex watch, and a Kahr Arms PM .40 caliber hand gun. The home was locked and no forced entry was found. The burglary is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. Drug arrest

Reported: Wednesday, 06/05/19 at 1200
Location: 2923 Medary Ave. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time a citizen reported three occupants of a silver ford vehicle in the parking lot of the SDSU Insect Lab just north of Brookings that were believed to be snorting an unknown substance. A Deputy from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office stopped the vehicle leaving the parking lot. Narcotics believed to be methamphetamine, various drug paraphernalia, suspected stolen electronics, suspected stolen credit cards, and burglary tools were located in the vehicle. 28 year old Duran James American Horse, and 28 year old Anthony Alden of Aberdeen, SD were arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, ingesting a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, grand theft, and possession of burglary tools. 21 year old Hannah Marie Malsom of Aberdeen was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, grand theft, possession of burglary tools, and failure to stop from a driveway before entering a roadway. Duran James American Horse, and Anthony Alden were on parole out of Brown County and are being held at the Brookings County Detention Center on a parole hold. Hannah Marie Malsom is being held at the Brookings County Detention Center on a $1,000.00 cash or surety bond.

Burglary

Location: 21081 1st Ave. S. (Bushnell, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of $100.00 worth of frozen meat that was stolen from a garage at a residence in Bushnell, SD. An unknown suspect was found in the garage looking in the freezer about a week to a week and a half prior to when the meat was found missing on Saturday, 05/25/19. The theft of the meat is believed to have happened sometime between Friday, 05/17/19 to Saturday, 05/25/19. It was found that a blue 1994 Buick Regal, that was parked on the shoulder of the road in the 100 blk of E. Main St. had been struck by an unknown vehicle that was traveling east on E. Main St. The hit and run happened sometime between Thursday, 05/30/19 at 1715 to when it was noticed on Friday, 05/31/19 at 0530. Fire

Location: Hwy 14 and 209th St. (Arlington, SD)

On the above date and time Arlington Fire Dept., Lake Preston Fire Dept., Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a corn pile on fire. The corn pile is owned by Prairie Ag Partners. It was found that the main station tower and pile of corn beneath it was on fire. The Fire Departments were able to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is believed to be caused by the moisture and heat in the pile of corn. The tower is believed to be undamaged but will require and inspection. The corn that was lost is believed to be valued at $40,000.00.

Drug arrest

Reported: Saturday, 05/18/19 @ 0737
Location: 455th Ave. near 197th St. (Arlington, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the South Dakota Hwy Patrol, and Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle in the ditch with two male subjects that appeared impaired and had a rifle in the vehicle. Upon arrival the parties in the vehicle would not follow directions from Law Enforcement. The driver eventually complied and exited the vehicle. 33 year old Richard Tuve of Sioux Falls, SD was found to be under the influence of a narcotic and in possession of a loaded firearm. He was taken into custody and arrested for DUI, possession of a controlled substance, ingesting a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was also arrested on two outstanding warrants. The passenger of the vehicle was evaluated by the Arlington Ambulance and then released.

Vandalism

Location: 200 Blk of Broadway St. (Aurora, SD)

On the above date and time an Aurora, SD resident reported that someone broke the front windshield of their 1996 Ford F350F Motor Home that was parked near their residence. It appeared that the suspect or suspects struck the windshield with a hammer causing it to crack. The vandalism occurred sometime between Thursday, 05/16/19 at 2000 to when it was noticed on Friday, 05/17/19 at 1200. The cost to replace the windshield is unknown at this time. Fire

Reported: Sunday, 05/19/19 @ 0430
Location: 600 Blk of Antelope St. S. (Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Aurora Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residential fire at the above location. It was found that the owners of the home had parked their 2003 Ford Escape in their garage, which is attached to their home at around 2130 on 05/18/19. They advised that they awoke to smoke in their home around 0430. They opened the door to the garage and observed heavy smoke and flames coming from underneath the vehicle. Elkton Fire Dept. and Aurora Fire Dept. were able to extinguish the fire. The vehicle, and garage were a total loss. The home received smoke damage and the owner estimated the damage to be at least $50,000.00. The fire is under investigation with the Elkton Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time Volga First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that 16 year old Evan Rathbun was traveling southbound on Marvin Ave. and did not yield for the yield sign at 3rd St and proceeded into the intersection. The 2000 Pontiac Sunfire Evan was driving was then struck by a 2006 Chevy Trail Blazer that was traveling eastbound on 3rd St and was driven by 46 year old Lisa Skovlund. Evan Rathbun was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. Evan Rathbun was charged with failure to yield right of way at an intersection. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Vandalism

Location: Volga City Auditorium (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a vandalism at the above location. It was found that several windows had been broken out with a baseball and a brick, which were located at the scene both outside and inside of the Auditorium. The vandalism is believed to have happened sometime between Friday, 05/03/19 at 1900 to when it was found on Monday, 05/06/19 at around 1845. The cost to replace the windows is unknown at this time. On the above date and time Aurora First Responders, Brookings Ambulance, Brookings Police Dept., and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury accident at the above location. It was found that Unit 1 was traveling east on Hwy 14. Unit 2 was traveling north on 476th Ave. and had stopped at the intersection of Hwy 14 and 476th Ave. Driver of unit 2 stated he did not see unit 1 and pulled into the intersection as he was turning west onto Hwy 14. The two vehicle collided in the intersection. There were 5 passengers in unit 1 and the above two passengers were transported by ambulance to the Brookings hospital with unknown injuries. Driver of unit 1 Roger Jenniges was issued a citation for an expired driver’s license. Driver of unit 2 Kienan O’Connel was issued a citation for a stop sign violation. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Stolen calf

Location: 600 blk of W. 44th St. S. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time a rural Brookings resident reported the theft of a small black calf with a green ear tag. The owner said he went back to the feeding area of the pen and noticed one calf was missing. The owner advised that the theft occurred sometime on Friday, 04/26/19 at 1000 to when he noticed the calf missing at 1800. The owner advised that he did notice a white pickup truck driving in the area that he did not recognize. Fire

Location: 46537 214th St. (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shed that was on fire at the above location. It was found that the fire originated in a 2000 Peterbilt Semi Truck that was parked in the shed. There was also a 2018 GMC Denali pick up, a 2005 Outback 5th wheel camper, a 300 International tractor and loader, and a 320 John Deer Farmhand that was parked in the shed and received extensive damage. The total estimated damage to the shed, and vehicles is around $270,000.00. The fire appeared to have originated in the engine compartment of the Semi Truck, but what started the fire is unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Vehicle fire

Reported: Saturday, 04/20/19 @ 1200
Location: Rural Aurora, SD.

On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 1984 Freightliner Semi Tow Truck that was on fire in the Aurora Auto Body Impound lot. The truck had been started and was running and the owner had left for a short time and when he returned he found that it was on fire. He attempted to put it out with fire extinguishers but was unsuccessful. The Aurora Fire Dept. was dispatched and extinguished the fire. The vehicle was a total loss and valued at $40,000.00. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Burglary

Reported: Thursday, 04/18/19 @ 1315
Location: 48152 Hwy 13 (Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a theft of power tools stolen from Crosswinds Dairy near Elkton, SD. It was found that the theft occurred on Wednesday, 04/17/19 between 2117 to 2154. Video of a suspect that is believed to be a Hispanic Male enter the building where the tools were stolen from. The value of the power tools is unknown at this time.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office also took a report of a theft at Hilltop Dairy (Rural Elkton, SD). This theft is believed to have occurred on Wednesday, 04/17/19 at around 0230. Several tools were stolen from the shop. The same suspect is believed to have committed this burglary as well. On the above date and time the Arlington Fire Dept., Bruce Fire Dept., Arlington Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a storage building that was on fire at the above location. The building was a complete loss along with electrical equipment, a skid loader, back hoe/trencher, 4 wheeler, cable plows, and misc. tools. The value of the barn and items is unknown at this time. The cause of the fire is also unknown at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Location: 20165 468th Ave. (Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Bruce Fire Dept., Brookings Fire Dept., Estelline Fire Dept., Estelline Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Dairy Barn that was on fire at the above location. It was found that a truck used to clean bunkers in the Dairy Barn had caught on fire due to an unknown mechanical issue while a worker was operating it. It was found that the fire spread to some of the bunks in the barn. The fire departments were able to contain the fire and no one or livestock were injured. The estimated damage the building was $100,000.00. The Mensch 3410 Vacuum Truck was a total loss and valued at $189,000.00.

Aggravated Assault

Location: 48612 212th St. (Rural Elkton, SD).

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Brookings Emergency room as a 23 year old male was transported there by private party that had been slashed with a knife. It was found that an altercation had taken place at the above address where the 23 year old victim was slashed with a knife. The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office has identified 22 year old Arturo Mendez as a suspect and are looking for him in connection to the assault. He is described as a Hispanic male, slender, with short dark hair and dark eyes, his height and weight are unknown. He is possibly in a white Ford Explorer with Minnesota license plate of 6CB905. He has ties to Brookings and Moody counties. The victim was treated and released from the Brookings Hospital. The victim and suspect know each other and are coworkers at a rural dairy facility.
