Rollover Accident


Occurred: 9/3/2021 at 7:50PM
Location: 200 Block Industrial Dr, Volga, SD
Driver: Tyler Deibert, 29, of Volga, SD
Passenger: Talon Holt, 27, of Brookings
Vehicle: 2019 Ca-am Maverick

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took report of a rollover accident which occurred on private property at the above location. It was found the driver was going around a building when the vehicle began to roll. The driver then over corrected and the vehicle rolled twice partially ejecting the driver. The driver, Tyler Deibert was taken to the Brookings ER by private conveyance for unknown injuries. The driver didn’t have a seatbelt on. The passenger had a seatbelt on and wasn’t injured. The vehicle sustained approx. $4,000 damage. This incident remains under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Arlington Fire Department and Arlington Ambulance responded to the above location for an injury accident. It was found the vehicle had struck a deer and during the impact, both occupants of the vehicle received unknown injuries. They were both treated and released from the scene by Arlington Ambulance. The vehicle sustained approx. $2,100. The accident remains under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Intentional Damage

On the above time and date, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took report of a vehicle damaged in the City Park in White. It was reported, sometime between 8/27/2021 and 8/29/2021, an unknown person entered the vehicle and attempted to push the windshield out with their feet from the inside. This caused an estimated $1,100 damage. This incident remains under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and Brookings Fire Department responded to the above location for hay bales smoldering. Upon arrival, crews found four round hay bales, positioned in a line of many bales, were smoking. The Brookings Fire Department with the assistance of the land owner were able to separate the bales and extinguish the fire. The damage of the incident is estimated at $400.00.

Burglary

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took report of a burglary. It was found sometime between 10/9/2020 and 3/6/2021 someone had pried open a shop door at the residence and stole the following items:

The value of the stolen items is estimated at $1,604.96. The damage to the structure is estimated at $250.00. This incident remains under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, the Brookings Police Department and the Brookings Ambulance responded to a single vehicle rollover. It was found the vehicle was traveling south on 469th Ave just south of 214th St when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle began to slide on the roadway where it eventually entered the ditch and rolled. The driver and passenger were treated at the scene by the Brookings Ambulance and released. The vehicle sustained approx. $8,500 damage. This incident remains under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Area residents were able to extinguish the flames prior to emergency responders. The electric box was destroyed and estimated to cost $3,000 to replace. The fire is currently under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Burglary

It appears the suspect entered the residence through an unlocked door and began rummaging through the owner’s items. It was found the suspect then stole a .22 revolver and an undisclosed amount of cash.

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the Brookings Ambulance responded to a single vehicle rollover accident. It was reported the vehicle was found resting on its roof and the passerby assisted the driver, Kendra Flaherty, from the vehicle and waited for crews to respond. It was determined, the driver hit a gravel pile on the edge of the roadway causing the vehicle to turn, eventually resulting in the vehicle rolling over. The driver was treated for injuries and released at the scene. The vehicle sustained approx. $11,500 damage. This incident remains under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Motorcycle Accident

It was found the driver did not remember what occurred during the incident prior to the crash. He was taken, by ambulance, to the Brookings Hospital for unknown injuries. The driver was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The motorcycle sustained approx. $2,000 damage. This incident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Structure Fire

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Volga Fire Department and Bruce Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at the above location. Upon arrival, crews found the mobile home to be filled with smoke. No one was home at the time of the fire. After extinguishing the fire, it was discovered two dogs did not make it out of the residence and were found deceased inside. The owners believe the residence is a total loss and estimated the value at $15000. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The incident remains under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above time and date, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Volga Fire Department and Brookings Ambulance responded to a two vehicle collision at the above location. It was found a passenger bus was properly stopped for the tracks when vehicle #1 stopped behind the bus to wait. While waiting, vehicle #2 struck vehicle #1from behind pushing vehicle #1 into the bus. During the collision, both vehicles sustained extensive damage. The bus had minor damage to the rear bumper. Robert was taken to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance for unknown injuries. Suzanne was treated by the Brookings Ambulance at the scene and released. The accident is under investigation with the South Dakota Highway Patrol (SDHP) for further information contact the SDHP.

On the above time and date, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a hit and run collision. A black Honda Civic was parked along with west side of West Oakwood Shoreline Dr. Sometime between noon and 6:58PM a white or silver vehicle had struck the parked car and left the scene without notifying the owner or law enforcement. Hit and Run

Vehicle: 2021 International Semi w/box trailer
Suspect Vehicle: Maroon pickup

On the above time and date, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a hit and run accident. A maroon was pickup traveling in the four lane section of US14 going eastbound in the westbound lanes while going around the corner of the US14/US81 intersection. While doing this a westbound semi was passing another westbound vehicle, the semi driver swerved to avoid a head-on collision with the pickup and the pickup struck the side of the trailer near the rear tires, the pickup entered the median and continued to travel eastbound after regaining control. The pickup and driver did not stop at the scene and fled. The cost to repair the damage to the trailer is unknown at this time.

On the above time and date, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Bruce Fire Department and the Brooking Ambulance responded to an injury accident at the above location. It was found a seven year old boy was riding an electric scooter on a trail within the campground when he crossed a road. While doing this he hit a pickup traveling an appropriate speed through the campground. During this impact, the boy’s leg became pinned under the rear tire. The boy was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance to be treated for unknown injuries. The boy was then transferred to a Sioux Falls Hospital. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Brookings Ambulance and Aurora Fire Department responded to a single vehicle motorcycle accident with injuries. It was found Kristen Norgaard, 35 of Aurora, SD had accelerated too quickly causing the rear to “fishtail.” While doing this, the motorcycle went onto its side where the driver was found. Kristen was taken to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance for unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Abduction / Kidnapping

Reported: 7/18/21 @ 4:20 A.M.
Location: Oakwood State Park

On the above date and time a kidnapping was reported at the above location. It was reported that 22 year old Jasmine Benning of Sioux Falls was sitting in a vehicle with two friends when a Blue Jeep pulled up behind them. A male suspect identified as 23 year old Alexander Felipe Andrade of Sioux Falls exited the Jeep with a machete and approached the victim’s vehicle. Alexander started swinging the machete striking the vehicle. Alexander reached into the vehicle and forcefully removed Jasmine. Alexander forced her into the vehicle he was driving and left the scene. The SDSU Police located the suspect vehicle on the Highway 14 bypass near Brookings and pursued it for several miles on Interstate 29 then onto highway 324 before losing it. Awhile later the Sioux Falls Police located the vehicle in Sioux Falls and began to pursue it. Sioux Falls Police terminated the pursuit for safety reasons. Minutes later the suspect vehicle was located as it had ran out of gas. Jasmine was able to get away from Alexander and make a call to Police. Alexander fled on foot and is still at large. Alexander and Jasmine had been in a previous relationship. Alexander is being charged with kidnapping in the 1st degree, intentional damage to property, 2 counts of aggravated assault and 1 count of aggravated domestic assault. A female identified as Ashle Heier age 29 of Brookings was in the suspect vehicle with Alexander at the time of the kidnapping. Ashle was located, interviewed and released by Police. Charges are pending.

City of White Vehicle Break-Ins

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office has successfully made arrests on the individuals responsible for the recent vehicle break-ins and thefts in the White area, recovering numerous wallets, purses and other items. The suspects were identified as 23 year old female Miranda Sanow of Lake Benton, MN and 21 year old male Sabyn Polfliet-Welvaert of Ghent, MN. Sanow is currently in the custody of the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office on a $2,500 cash only bond. Polfiet-Welvaert is currently in custody in Lynon County, MN facing local charges as well as being held for the Brookings County Warrant.

It was found a white vehicle had caused significant cosmetic damage to the parked vehicle and departed the scene without notifying the owner or law enforcement. The estimated cost to repair the vehicle is $3,400.

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office along with Volga Fire Department, Volga First Responders and Brookings Ambulance responded to a one vehicle injury accident at the above location. The vehicle was traveling southbound when it went off the east side of the road, hit a field approach where it vaulted over a fence, struck a utility pole and landed in a pasture. The driver, 34 year old Ryan Nesseim, was transported to the Brookings Hospital by Brookings Ambulance to be treated for unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Location: 500blk W 4th St, White SD

On the above date and time, it was reported two handguns were stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked at a residence in the above location. A suspect or suspects entered the vehicle sometime between 6/20/2021 and 6/25/2021 and stole both firearms from a 2010 Chevy pickup. The first pistol is described as a .22 revolver with wood stock and fitted leather holster, this pistol is loaded however shells were all previously fired. The other pistol is a 40 caliber semi-automatic Ruger with loaded magazine in a cloth type holster with extra magazine pouch.

Intentional Damage

Location: Elkton Ambulance Garage

On the above date and time, deputies were requested to the above location for a report of intentional damage to the property. It was found someone had moved an aluminum can collection box in order to gain access to the north entry door. Once at the door, the individual(s) pried the frame of the door away from the lock and made entry into the building. Nothing was found to be stolen. The amount of the damage to the door is unknown at this time. This incident is currently under investigation.

Location: 500blk W 5th St, White

On the above date and time, a wallet and a purse were reported stolen from a vehicle. The vehicle, a 2015 Nissan Pathfinder, was parked outside a residence in the above location. A suspect or suspects entered the vehicle sometime between 5:30PM on 6/23/2021 and the time it was reported. The purse was suede with a flip type top cover and the wallet was red. The wallet contained credit cards and an undisclosed amount of cash. The purse contained cosmetic items.

Theft-Items From Vehicle

Reported: 6/23/21 @ 10:35 a.m.
Location: 100 blk of E. 5th St. White, SD

On the above date and time two wallets were reported stolen from vehicles at the above location. A 2015 Dodge Ram truck and a 2020 Jeep Compass were parked in the driveway of the residence unlocked. A suspect or suspects entered both vehicles sometime between 8p.m. on 6/22/21 and 7a.m. on 6/23.21 and stole a wallet out of each vehicle. The wallet stolen from the Dodge truck is described as a black flip open wallet with drivers license, credit cards, debit card, random gift cards and a undisclosed amount of cash. The wallet stolen from the Jeep is described as a tan Coach zip up wallet that looks like a small hand bag. The contents inside included a credit card, debit card, drivers license, random gift cards and random rewards cards.

Fatal Tractor Accident

Reported: 6/16/2021 at 1105AM
Location: 484th Ave, 3/4mile north of 207th St

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Elkton Ambulance, Elkton Fire Department, Brookings Ambulance and Brookings Fire Department responded to a tractor rollover with a male pinned underneath. The accident was reported by a passing motorist who stayed at the scene until first responders arrived. The driver was operating a John Deere 4030 tractor with a sickle mower attached cutting the grass in the ditch when the tractor rolled, pinning the driver underneath the cab. First responders found the driver was deceased at the scene. The driver was identified as Duane Emmett Age 71 of Brookings, SD. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office along with the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Arlington Ambulance and Arlington Fire Department responded to a two vehicle collision at the above location. It was found Heather Runia was operating her vehicle northbound on 457th Ave and failed to stop for a stop sign. While going through the intersection Runia’s vehicle, a 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 was impacted by a vehicle driven by Eli Hudgens. After impacting, the vehicles then went into the north ditch. Heather was treated and released at the scene by Arlington Ambulance while Eli’s passenger, John Hudgens was transported to the Brookings Hospital for unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Sinai Fire Department and Volga Fire Department responded to the above location for an abandoned structure fire spreading to hay bales. Later, mutual aid was requested from the Brookings Fire Department, Elkton Fire Department, White Fire Department and Bruce Fire Department. It was found someone had been burning an old barn with permission of the property’s owner. The fire spread accidently to the vacant farm house and nearby hay bales. Total damage of the incident is unknown at this time.

On the above date and time a 4 wheeler was reported stolen from the above location. The 4 wheeler was parked between the driveway and the house. The 4 wheeler was stolen sometime between 7p.m. on 6/2/21 and 10:00a.m. on 6/3/21. The 4 wheeler is described as a 1998 Polaris 300, Green in color. It has a ball hitch and Black plastic racks on the front and back. The value is estimated at $1500.

It was reported that a Dewalt tool bag with several tools in it was stolen from the bed of the truck parked at the above location from 12:30p.m. - 5p.m. on 5-30-21. The estimated value of the stolen tools is $330. The theft is under investigation.

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office along with the Arlington Ambulance, Arlington Fire Department, Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office and Volga Fire Department responded to a one vehicle injury accident at the above location. The driver lost control of the vehicle on a gravel road, entered the ditch and rolled. The driver, 14 year old James Raatz was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Arlington Ambulance to be treated for unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and charges are pending.

On the above date and time, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Brookings Fire Department and Brookings Ambulance responded to a rollover in the median of I29 near mile marker 126. The incident occurred when Unit #1 and Unit #2 were in the driving lanes next to each other. While passing, Unit #2 impacted Unit #1 in the passenger side, sending them both into the median where Unit #1 rolled. Unit #2 did not roll, re-entered the interstate and continued south. The 33 year old driver of Unit #1, Brian Fett, was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance for unknown injuries. A witness was able to describe Unit #2 and a suspect vehicle has been identified. The incident is currently under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver advised she lost control driving across a deep rut on the minimum maintenance road and lost control. The vehicle then rolled, causing the driver to come off the ATV. The driver, 30 year old Racquel Demarteleare, was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Elkton Ambulance to be treated for unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time, the Sinai Fire Dept., Volga Fire Dept, Brookings Fire Dept, South Dakota Highway Patrol and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a large grass fire at the above location. The fire was believed to have been started by the road and went into a grass field. The above listed fire departments extinguished the flames and the landowner reported no monetary loss.

Skidsteer Fire

Location 19775 484th Ave Astoria

At the above date and time a skidsteer fire was reported at the above location. An individual had called in a controlled burn as he was burning logs and downed trees in a gravel pit. The male operating the skidsteer attempted to add to the pile, when the side of the gravel pit gave way. The skidsteer then slid into the pit. The operator of the skidsteer managed to escape without injury. The loss of the skidsteer is estimated to be $38,000. The fire is currently under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Hunting accident

Location: Field west of 482nd Ave. and south of 205th St. (White, SD)

On the above date and time the White Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance, South Dakota Game Fish and Parks, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hunting accident involving two men that were bow hunting turkeys. It was found that 62 year old Mark Steinborn of Sioux Falls, SD had been accidently shot with an arrow by his 29 year old son Gabriel Steinborn, also of Sioux Falls, SD.
Life saving measures were attempted at the scene, but were unsuccessful. The incident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Location: Hwy 81 & 203rd St. (Arlington, SD)

On the above date and time the Arlington Fire Dept., Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle on fire at the above location. It was found that a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer was fully engulfed in flames. The fire was extinguished by the Arlington Fire Dept., but the vehicle was a complete loss. The fire is believed to have started in the engine compartment as one of the reporting parties said when they first arrived the engine was only on fire. An unknown subject was seen walking north from the scene prior to units arriving on scene. The owner of the vehicle has not been located yet at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Location: Caspian Ave. & Hwy 14 (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shed that was on fire to the NE of the above location. It was found that a tractor was parked next to the shed and a battery charger was plugged into an outlet inside of the shed and then connected to the tractor. It was later found that the shed was on fire. The Volga Fire Dept. extinguished the flames. The Tractor a 1960’s International 706 received damage to the front of the unit. A Yamaha ATV, an unknown ATV, several engines inside of the shed, tractor tires, and miscellaneous items were destroyed in the fire. The damage to the shed, and estimate of property damage is unknown at this time. It appears the cause of the fire was electrical in nature and is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

It was found that an unknown vehicle was traveling northbound and entered the east ditch of Hwy 13 and drove through the fence. It appeared the vehicle became stuck, and pulled out. The cost to repair the fence is estimated at $100.00. On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and Brookings Fire Dept. responded to the above location for a skid loader on fire. It was found that a weed patch was being burned and to prevent the spreading of the fire the skid loader operator was digging a trench around it when the skid loader caught on fire. The New Holland LX565 skid loader was a total loss. The estimated loss $5,000. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
