Occurred: Between 2:00PM 4/30/2021 and 6:00AM 5/1/2021
Location: 300 Block Marvin Ave, Volga

On the above time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of an unknown vehicle striking a garage door. It was found the unknown vehicle had pulled into the driveway of the residence, caused significant damage to the garage door and departed the scene. The cost to repair the garage door is just under $3,000.
This incident remain under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. Occurred: Between 9:00PM 4/11/2021 and 1:00PM 5/2/2021
Location: 300Blk US Hwy 14

On the above time and date, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took report of a storage unit in the 300Blk of US14 in Volga had been broken into sometime between 4/11/2021 and 5/2/2021. It appears the lock was forcibly removed from the unit and over $16,000 worth of property was stolen. The following large items were stolen from the storage unit:

Lowrance 7 fish finder

Fire

Reported: Thursday, 4/29/2021 at 1:38PM
Location: 458th Ave/219th St (Sinai, SD)

On the above date and time, the Sinai Fire Dept., Volga Fire Dept, Brookings Fire Dept, South Dakota Highway Patrol and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a large grass fire at the above location. The fire was believed to have been started by the road and went into a grass field. The above listed fire departments extinguished the flames and the landowner reported no monetary loss.

Skidsteer Fire

Reported 4/21/2021 @ 0731hrs
Location 19775 484th Ave Astoria

At the above date and time a skidsteer fire was reported at the above location. An individual had called in a controlled burn as he was burning logs and downed trees in a gravel pit. The male operating the skidsteer attempted to add to the pile, when the side of the gravel pit gave way. The skidsteer then slid into the pit. The operator of the skidsteer managed to escape without injury. The loss of the skidsteer is estimated to be $38,000. The fire is currently under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Vandalism

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of racial and vulgar graffiti spray painted on an electrical pole owned by Sioux Valley Energy at the above location. The graffiti was spray painted on the pole sometime between Tuesday, 04/13/21 to Tuesday, 04/20/21. Hunting accident

Location: Field west of 482nd Ave. and south of 205th St. (White, SD)

On the above date and time the White Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance, South Dakota Game Fish and Parks, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hunting accident involving two men that were bow hunting turkeys. It was found that 62 year old Mark Steinborn of Sioux Falls, SD had been accidently shot with an arrow by his 29 year old son Gabriel Steinborn, also of Sioux Falls, SD.
Life saving measures were attempted at the scene, but were unsuccessful. The incident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire

Reported: Friday, 04/16/21 @ 5:45 AM
Location: Hwy 81 & 203rd St. (Arlington, SD)

On the above date and time the Arlington Fire Dept., Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle on fire at the above location. It was found that a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer was fully engulfed in flames. The fire was extinguished by the Arlington Fire Dept., but the vehicle was a complete loss. The fire is believed to have started in the engine compartment as one of the reporting parties said when they first arrived the engine was only on fire. An unknown subject was seen walking north from the scene prior to units arriving on scene. The owner of the vehicle has not been located yet at this time. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Reported: Sunday, 04/18/21 @ 4:45 PM
Location: Caspian Ave. & Hwy 14 (Volga, SD)

On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shed that was on fire to the NE of the above location. It was found that a tractor was parked next to the shed and a battery charger was plugged into an outlet inside of the shed and then connected to the tractor. It was later found that the shed was on fire. The Volga Fire Dept. extinguished the flames. The Tractor a 1960’s International 706 received damage to the front of the unit. A Yamaha ATV, an unknown ATV, several engines inside of the shed, tractor tires, and miscellaneous items were destroyed in the fire. The damage to the shed, and estimate of property damage is unknown at this time. It appears the cause of the fire was electrical in nature and is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of vehicle that had travelled off the road and damaged a fence. It was found that an unknown vehicle was traveling northbound and entered the east ditch of Hwy 13 and drove through the fence. It appeared the vehicle became stuck, and pulled out. The cost to repair the fence is estimated at $100.00. Intentional Damage/Vandalism

On the above date and time a deputy responded to the above location for a vehicle that had been vandalized. It was found that a 1989 Chevy C-1500 pickup was parked on private property and all the windows and mirrors were broken out. The damage is estimated at $1,000.

It was reported that a Gold/Tan colored car was seen doing “Donuts” in the field. The vehicle is believed to have started the fire. The Brookings Fire Dept. extinguished the fire. Location: 500 blk 34th Ave. Brookings

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and Brookings Fire Dept. responded to the above location for a skid loader on fire. It was found that a weed patch was being burned and to prevent the spreading of the fire the skid loader operator was digging a trench around it when the skid loader caught on fire. The New Holland LX565 skid loader was a total loss. The estimated loss $5,000. The fire is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Train accident

Location: RR tracks south of N. Drive on Cornell Ave. (Elkton, SD)
Driver: Lilana Rueda Age: 28
Elkton, SD
Vehicle: 2006 Nissan Murano Damage: Substantial rear end damage.

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept., Elkton Ambulance, South Dakota Hwy Patrol, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a train –v- car accident at the above location. It was found that the above driver was traveling southbound on Cornell Ave. in Elkton just south of N. Drive and did not see the train coming or hear the horn blowing. As the vehicle went over the tracks the train collided with the rear end of the vehicle. The vehicle sustained heavy rear end damage. No one was injured and the driver was issued a citation for no valid driver’s license, and failure to yield. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Grass Fire

Reported: Monday, 03/29/21 @ 3:35 PM
Location: Near 45927 212th St. Volga, SD

On the above date and time the Volga Fire Dept., assisted by the Sinai Fire Dept., and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a grass fire near the above location. It was found that on Saturday, 03/27/21 the property owner had burned a pile of tree branches. It is believed that due to the low humidity and high winds the burn pile reignited, which caused the grass to burn downwind from the burn pile. No structures were damaged. The Volga and Sinai Fire Dept. were able to extinguish the fire.

On the above date and time the Elkton Fire Dept. and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a grass fire near the RR tracks at the above location. It was believed that the fire was started by sparks from the tracks as a train had recently passed through the area. The fire was extinguished by the Elkton Fire Dept. No structures were damaged.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of vandalism to a Ford Fusion car. It was found that three of the tires had been slashed and an unknown substance was put into the gas tank of the vehicle. The incident happened sometime between Saturday, 03/27/21 at 8:30 PM to Sunday, 03/28/21 at 0430. The damage to the tires and vehicle is estimated at $2150. Location: 3250 Western Ave. S. (Rural Brookings, SD)

On the above date and time a rural Brookings resident reported that an unknown suspect entered the home sometime while they were out of town between Thursdays, 02/18/21 at 3:00 PM to when it was noticed on Wednesday, 03/16/21 at 9:00 PM. Entry is believed to be gained through an unlocked window in the back of the residence. The following items were stolen from the residence.

1) Taurus G2 9MM pistol with 2 full 11 round magazines.
2) 3 Michael Kors purses.
3) 1 Louis Vuitton purses
4) 1 Burberry purse
5) Misc. games and Blue Ray DVD’s
6) 9 pairs of Jordan shoes
7) 1 playstation gaming system

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a vandalism at the above location. It was found that sometime between October to November of 2020 the owners of the residence noticed that a window was broken on their home. While it was being replaced on the above date and time the company replacing the window found with what was believed to be a 9mm bullet between the outside glass and the inside glass. On the above date and time the Brookings Ambulance, Aurora Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle injury accident at the above location. The driver of unit 1 advised she was traveling northbound and fell asleep. The vehicle went off the east side of the road, where it struck a field approach. The vehicle vaulted into the air and landed back into the ditch. The driver 43 year old Tonia Grimsrud was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Burglary, criminal entry of a motor vehicle, simple assault domestic, & vandalism

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a break in and assault at a rural Bruce area. It was found that 20 year old Elizabeth Hofer had entered a motor vehicle and then broke into the home damaging property while entering. Inside the home she assaulted a 47 year old female. Prior to deputies arriving the suspect had left the residence and was later located at a home in Aurora, SD where she was arrested and is facing charges for the above listed offenses.

Location: I29 Northbound Elkton Exit.

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a vehicle that had struck the guard rail at the above location. It was found that the unknown suspect vehicle was traveling north and went off the roadway to the west a struck the guard rail causing extensive damage to the guard rail. The unknown suspect vehicle left the scene and there is no description of the vehicle. The guard rail is owned by the SD DOT and the damage is estimated at $3,500.00. On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a 55 mph speed limit sign stolen from the above location sometime between Friday, 12/25/20 to when it was noticed on Monday, 12/28/20.  The sign is owned by the Brookings County Highway Dept. and valued at $25.00. Theft

Reported:  Monday, 12/28/20 @ 3:35 PM
Location:  218A St. near 456th Ave.  (Sinai, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of Leupold binoculars and a partial box of Federal 12 gauge 3.5 inch T shot shotgun shells stolen from a vehicle.  The reporting party advised that while he was goose hunting on Friday, 12/18/20 between 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM he had parked his vehicle leaving it unlocked near the above location.  He advised that when he returned to his vehicle and was heading home he noticed that his Leupold binoculars and the partial box of shotgun shells had been stolen from his vehicle.  He valued the binoculars and shotgun shells at $415.00.  Anyone with any information about this case can contact the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office at 605-696-8300 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously by visiting www.brookingsareacrimestoppers.com or by calling 605-692-STOP (7867).

Fire

Reported:  Thursday, 12/24/20 at 4:40 AM
Location:  300 Blk of S. 4th St. (Sinai, SD)

On the above date and time the Sinai Fire Dept., Volga Fire Dept, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house fire at the above location.  It was found that a wall behind a wood stove used to heat the home had started on fire.  The fire was extinguished by the homeowner and neighbor prior to the Fire Dept. arriving.  The damage to the home is estimated at $5,000.00.

Hit and run

Reported:  Saturday, 12/26/20 at 10:30 PM
Location:  46609 200th St. (Bruce, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to the above address for a report of a transformer box that had been struck on the property by an unknown vehicle.  The power was shut off to the farm and water heaters for the livestock had frozen due to no power.  The transformer box was owned by Sioux Valley Power and they advised that there was no damage to their equipment and the joint inside the box had been disconnected, which caused the power to the farm to go out.  The incident happened sometime between Thursday, 12/24/20 at 1200 to Saturday, 12/26/20 at 10:10 PM.  Anyone with any information about this case can contact the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office at 605-696-8300 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously by visiting www.brookingsareacrimestoppers.com or by calling 605-692-STOP (7867).

Location: 207th St/466th Ave

On the above time and date Volga Fire Department and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a large grass fire in the above location. It was determined a controlled burning of 60 acres of CRP was burning late and needed to be extinguished. Volga Fire extinguished the flames without any monetary loss or injuries.

Reported: 12/11/2020 @ 4:15p.m.
Location: 47452 210th street, Aurora

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Brookings Fire Department and Aurora Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the above location. It was found that the owner had been burning garbage in a burn barrel on the west side of the barn. The owner thought the fire was out and left the residence around 2:00 PM. When he arrived back the barn was fully engulfed in flames. Various Bobcat implements and attachment were lost inside of the barn along with hydraulic tools and railroad lumber. The estimated loss was $150,000.00. The fire was extinguished by the above listed Fire Departments.

Aggravated assault

Reported: Tuesday, 12/08/20 @ 0255
Location: 300 Blk of E. 2nd St. (Elkton, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the SDSU Police Dept. responded to the above location where 44 year old Thomas Skime pointed a 9mm handgun and an AR-15 rifle at a 21 year old male victim. Thomas discharged a round from the 9mm pistol into a shed on the property. Alcohol was a factor in the incident. Thomas was taken into custody without incident and was arrested for possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated, aggravated assault, and commission of a felony with a firearm. Bond has been set at $5,000 Cash Only.

Fire

Reported: Thursday, 12/03/20 @1325
Location’s: 478th Ave. near SD Hwy 324, 472nd Ave. near 217th St.
On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., Brookings Fire Dept., and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to two separate fires at the above locations. It was found that semi-trucks were hauling old stumps and trees that had been burnt two weeks ago to a different location. While the trucks were hauling the trees and stumps burnt embers were coming off of them and landing in the ditch which caused the fires. The fire departments were able to extinguish the fires. The fires are under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and charges are pending against the drivers.

Accidental shooting

Reported: Thursday, 12/03/20 @ 1404
Location: 200 Blk of Elm Ave. in Aurora, SD
On the above date and time the Brookings Police Dept. was called to the Brookings Hospital Emergency Room for a gunshot wound to the hand. It was found that the incident happened outside of the City Limits of Brookings and the investigation was turned over to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. It was found that the male individual lived at the above location where the incident occurred. The subject was cleaning a Glock 19 .9mm handgun and didn’t realize a bullet was in the chamber and accidently discharged a round from the gun into his hand. Due to the severity of the injuries to the owners hand he was transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. The incident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Vandalism

Location: 20776 482nd Ave. (Rural White, SD)

On the above date and time the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a grain bin that had been vandalized. It was found that sometime in Oct. to Friday, 11/27/20 @ 4pm a suspect or suspects shot two holes into a grain bin. The cost to fix the grain bin was estimated at $3,644.00.
