The deadline for filing nominating petitions for the primary election is March 31, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. central time. If a petition is mailed by registered mail by March 31, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. central time, it is considered filed.
The deadline for filing nominating petitions to run as an independent candidate in the general election is April 28, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. central time. If a petition is mailed by registered mail by April 28, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. central time, it is considered filed. For the offices of Brookings County Commissioners, Brookings County Sheriff, Brookings County Finance Officer (remaining 2-years), Brookings County Register of Deeds, Coroner, Conservation District Supervisor, Republican Delegates to State Party Conventions, Precinct Committeemen and Committeewomen for the Republican Party nominating petitions must be filed in the office of the Brookings County Finance Office 520 3rd Street, Suite 100, Brookings, SD, and nominating petitions for the offices of U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Governor, State Senate District 7 & District 8, State Representative District 7 & District 8, East Dakota Water Development District Director Area 3 must be filed in the Office of the Secretary of State, 500 E Capitol Ave., State Capitol Building, Pierre, SD 57501.
Nominating petitions for the offices of Brookings County Commissioners, Brookings County Sheriff, Brookings County Finance Officer (remaining 2 years), Brookings County Register of Deeds, Coroner, Conservation District Supervisor, Republican Delegates to State Convention, Precinct Committeeman and Precinct Committeewoman for the Republican Party must be filed in the office of the Brookings County Finance Officer during regular business hours. Nominating petitions for the offices of U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Governor, State Senate District 7 & District 8, State Representative District 7 & District 8 and East Dakota Water Development District Director Area 3 must be filed in the Office of the Secretary of State, State Capitol Building, 500 E Capitol Ave., Pierre, SD 57501, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. central time.
